Back to School: Lockers or Backpacks?
By Ray Zheng
Having to carry 5 textbooks and 10 binders is a common issue for all students at Canterbury High School; as students have to decide whether to put our school materials in our lockers or our backpacks. Although individual students may have their preferences on what they want to use, according to most CHS students, backpacks still have major benefits over lockers.
“It’s just convenient," Amanda Yee says of backpacks. "I don't have to go to my locker between classes ‘cuz I'm lazy, and that's just too much work."
Backpacks are transportable, versatile and have good durability. Due to these important factors, students tend to use their backpacks as much as possible, keeping them a manageable weight and carrying them from class to class. Backpacks save the time hassle for students as well. Between each class, students at Canterbury High School only get five minutes to navigate through the crowded halls and some construction areas; and sometimes the locker locations and the student destinations are on opposite side of the school, so this is where backpacks come in handy.
Students have an option of carrying things with them in their backpack so that between classes, they can go straight to their next class without the need of going to their locker because they have already prepared their class material in their backpacks.
“With my schedule this semester, I have 4 binders and 3 different textbooks for science and (music) theory," Amanda says. "It's too heavy to carry it all in my bag. My back would hurt and I probably would fall over. Also, in the winter, it would be very annoying to have to carry my hat and jacket everywhere.”
We know, the backpack option is not perfect for everyone. A backpack cannot carry 5 textbooks and 10 binders; even if you pack could fit that much, your back won't be able to handle that much weight. When volume is an issue, lockers are the way to go.

“I play an instrument so the fact that I don’t have to carry around all of my binders, plus an instrument and music, is a lot easier. It’s nice to be able to just take what I need for the first two periods,” said Caelan Monkman.
Overall, both backpacks and lockers are great to help you stay organized throughout the year. Although backpacks have a lot of major benefits over lockers, lockers still provide students with a safe, and simple space to keep their stuff. It is something backpacks cannot do.
“I usually use my lockers in the morning, at lunch, and after school, and I only use my backpacks during classes and to get my binders and stuff from one class to another,” Said Julie Zielonka.
In my opinion, I really like this idea of going to the lockers at morning and lunch, prepare the stuff that is needed for period 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. That way, you’re not carrying too much stuff that hurts your back, and you don’t need to rush between classes.
In the end, students will have their own preferences. Some might love their locker location and use it all the time and never use their backpacks between their classes. Some might hate their lockers and carry their backpacks all the time. Whatever the preference and reasons behind them, backpacks and lockers exist for the same thing: to keep students organized and give each person a successful high school education.
