How business courses are helping CHS students succeed at school and in life
By Ana Ivetic
Why should students take business courses? Business courses at Canterbury offer a variety of tools for your future.
Topics such as digital literacy, design software, ethics and issues in information technology are all discussed in the Grade 9 course. In all of these units you learn so much useful information, for example, using software such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Photoshop. Therefore, in the future you will be accustomed to using the software at work making you ready and prepared for anything.
Throughout this course, students learn about identity theft and copyright as well. Which is very important to be educated on this information. These are just a few lessons this course offers.
In this course, students are able to participate in two contests: a poster contest and website development contest. The contests are put on by the Ontario Business Educators Association (OBEA). While making a website and poster, Canterbury student Souha Al-Ahdal said: “These contests taught me a lot about how important every detail is.”
Once again, this teaches students to review their work before turning it in. I asked a few business students their opinions on the course and what they were expecting to learn. This is what they had to say.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when going into this course, but I am honestly really happy that I took it,” says Ayden Storseth. "I used to be very nervous when presenting in front of the class, but in this course I actually overcome that fear.”

Which I think a lot of people may relate to this and can grow and learn from this. When Grade 9s go into a business course, their first year of high school they may not understand completely how the course will be. Although, it can really help them with their communication, just like it did to Ayden.
Business courses can teach students a variety of skills that will be beneficial for their future. If students take the course in Grade 9 then they will already be educated on many business practices and skills. Knowing subjects such as fraud detection, ergonomics and piracy.
Vienna Assaad said “learning how to keep my Google Drive and files organized made me organized with all my courses.”
Some students may have a hard time keeping track of their work and being organized. Business courses can help create a pattern and apply these techniques to other courses. It is very important for students to know the benefits of this course and encourage more students to take it throughout high school.
