Tiled Tomfoolery

Aaishah's Photo Essay

In a world full of worries of many sorts, there is one place we all run to. For whatever kind of relief that may give us. For many, it's a place to cry. An escape from all others. On the other hand, for some it's a place of unity, where many unite and come together to create moments cherished forever. A place agreed free of judgment and fear. Where strangers become those you look for every day. Whether it is a touchup at the end of lunch or filming TikToks in your spare, it is the one place that only seems right when crowded and desperate for ventilation. The only place you don't mind standing in a long line simply waiting, because there will always be a sight or converser to entertain you. A place with no rules, simply seen as a space free of intrusion. A place to be silly and fool around regardless of how heavy the mind may be. A feeling with many memories all wish to encapsulate in its true essence, but make do with the still life we call photos.

Pushing open that door not knowing what to expect. With possibilities including welcoming crowds or perhaps a territorial kind of silence. We all take that fraction of  breath before reaching for the handle. Not a breath of preparation but rather a ritual of leaving all other energies behind.
There are times of the day when you will walk into silence. You shoot someone a smile and go on to do whatever it is you need to do. Other times, you will walk into chaos. Havoc and pure laughter that will paint a smile across your face.

There are moments where you make eye contact, without your eves meeting al all. Where you are both glaring into a mirror and suddenly notice one of you isn't looking at themselves. You first exchange a smile, and then compliments you can argue about. And suddenly, now you smile every time
If you take a walk around the school you will see different groups of friends. You will see some sitting with their backs against the wall as they scroll in complete silence. Others will be louder than one can bear. Laughing, simply there for eachother, carefree of the world around.

There is always that one girl beside you whose beauty will leave you absolutely speechless. Truly a universal experience. She will be astonishing without doing anything at all. You don't know quite what to say, but manage to say something anyways, as it would be a crime if you didn't.

After the bell goes, it’s a hectic, critical time. But far more important than anything else is your entrance. How you come across when you show up to class. Those hardships of hustling through the halls are no problem as long as there is a minute to spare for touch-ups before class.

The most beautiful “coincidence” is when you and your friend end up in the bathroom at the same time. Now of course this extends the time of stay by just a bit. At a time like this that must be captured, what better to do than enter the photo booth

You know how much someone matters to the other when they treat their face like their own. When the same silence and precision is put into their look. When the same breath is halted, awaiting perfection. When nothing in the world matters apart from that smile of approval.

Behind closed doors, you witness sights of great compassion. It's refreshing to see how people are willing to show care for people they barely know. You don't hesitate before asking for another hand. In fact, sometimes you will ask when you don't even need a hand at all.

A scene that shocked us all at first but over time we became accustomed to. The understanding that those stalls aren't always used as they are meant but rather are simply three walls and a door to those escaping the public eye.

From among the many playful things that go on, very common is leaving your mark. Whether it is a note of encouragement or a few words for a great laugh and perhaps even a doodle, It’s great fun seeing what people have to say and unforgettably entertaining to remember onwards.
