At Second Glance: The Many Stories of the Lobby

The main lobby at CHS can be passed off at first glance as just another area of the school used when rushing to and from classes, donned with bad lighting and hurried footsteps.
However, when you’ve finally gotten to school early or have a spare in your tight schedule, you might stop to notice the versatility of this central space. As the hours pass by and people move from class to class, the lobby remains structurally stagnant, but visually it morphs with the time of day. The breakfast cart present in the early morning is replaced in later hours with a student on a spare, hurriedly typing on a sticker-clad Chromebook.
All in all, Canterbury’s main lobby serves as a domain to catch up on schoolwork, socialize with friends or simply pass through on the way to the library. When you’re a fatigued teenager worn out by the stress of assignments and simply trying to make it through the day it’s easy to take everything for granted.
But when you really have the time to think about it, it’s more than just an area to kill time in between classes. Even the spaces so bland and seemingly insignificant right now will mean so much more in a few years. For many, the main lobby was where they were when they stepped into Canterbury for the very first time. The group of students that fill the building now won’t be the same ever again, not even next year. It’s important to stop every once in a while and appreciate the small things. Admire the paintings adorning the walls, thank the janitor as they clean up. Because everything that is so normal now, even annoying- is something you may miss when you’re off to bigger and better things- even a measly school lobby!

Whether you're entering the school on your very first day of high school, a repetitive day in between, or even your last ever day as a Senior, chances are the lobby is the first thing you'll be greeted with.

All across the bustling school, there's always something going on. Often, said events will be held here. Who knows, maybe your future dream university awaits you in the form of a representative sat at an information table?

The view from the library’s entrance at the floor’s busiest time may be ordinary, but it's a right of passage. Students, staff and visitors alike are scattered throughout the space fulfilling various tasks.

You can practically hear this image- a group of friends sat down to study, enthusiastically sharing opinions and thoughts.

When you finally manage to get a few minutes to spare from your swamped schedule, the area outside of the library makes for a great, quick workspace. You're free to talk without fear of fracturing the library's eerily quiet environment without the overwhelming chorus of quips you may find in the average classroom.

When you're surrounded by the right people, where you've chosen to sit doesn't exactly matter. However, I much prefer an undisturbed corner outside the empty auditorium to the other areas throughout the school.

Picture

When passing through the lobby, it's hard to miss the library, adorned in Student Life posters and of course the light up Open sign. Without the library stationed to the right of the lobby, it's likely most students wouldn't think to give this space a second glance besides when entering and exiting the school.

Picture

As the minutes tick by, lunch break nears it's end. A group of students return from their outing just in time for third period, the remains of a pizza slice in tow.

Picture

While a certainly underrated hangout spot, some students utilize the large and primarily empty area to take up space while eating.

Picture

The lobby's large space is perfect for a big group of friends to spend time together. While the area itself may be inherently forgettable, the memories made when cramming together with your friends for a photo aren't.

Picture

When you've found yourself in a spare at the same time as a friend, you've got time to kill. What better way to spend it than catching up on gossip. After all, there's no one around to hear you other than the murals!

Picture

By the time the final bell rings and everyone packs up to go home, the serene, empty atmosphere present during the majority of the day is swallowed by the amount of students filling up the space as they exit the building.
