The magic may happen on the stage at the National Arts Centre, but there is so much work completed to ensure the setting comes to life around the audience. Walking into the Propshop, one might mistake it for a very eclectic antique shop. Shelves of knick-knacks await the next show that needs typewriters or old-fashioned cameras; while countless masks, instruments, and even one lone fawn line the walls. It might be chaos, but all the props are there for a reason.
“Our goal is to be as green as possible.” Nat and Kel, both part of the NAC props team, explain that preventing waste is one reason for their expansive collection. Old household items have had new life breathed into them, transforming them into incredible props. Furthermore, the team treasures their various creations. Nat’s face lights up as she displays a cake made for her very own production a few years back, while Kel fondly recounts the stories behind her favourite projects. Their pride is well deserved: the creativity and adaptability required for these inventions is astounding. These photos display the magical world backstage, but also the props team’s innovative prowess through looming lampposts and incredibly realistic “stone” statues.
